Goalkeepers
Andy Warrington
Andy was known for his shot stopping ability. Signed in 1999 from York City. He was ever present between the sticks at Belle Vue, playing in 196 games. A fans favorite, many say his most memorable game came in the 2003 play off semi final against Chester, saving 2 important penaltys. His last action for Rovers was in our 2005 League Cup run, whilst playing against Manchester City, young starlet Nedum Onuoha collided with Andy, Breaking the goalkeeper's leg. Andy was stretchered off and replaced by Danish Goalkeeper Jan Budtz. Andy help Rovers earn Promotion twice. In November 2006 he was loaned to Bury, who he later signed for in January and remained at the club for the rest of the season. He then moved closer to his Sheffield home in 2007 signing for Rotherham, where he was first choice keeper and fans favorite for many seasons making 205 appearances including one at Wembley. In May 2013 Rotherham manager Steve Evans released Andy. Steve said this was "as tough a decision as I have ever had to make in my managerial career". After leaving Rotherham Andy signed for Buxton, where he remains today along with two former Rovers Kevin Sandwith and Steve Brooker. Now 37 Andy holds UEFA B coaching license.
Stuart Nelson
Doncaster gave Stuart his first professional contract having previously been at Cheltenham as a youth player. He was signed as backup to Andy Warrington and only made 2 apperances in his time at Belle Vue between 2002 and 2003. He left Rovers in search of first team football and got his chance at Hucknall, he had attracted the attention of the club by impressive performances whilst in Doncaster's reserve team. He went on to make 20 appearances before being transferred to Brentford for £10,000 in 2004. He impressed during his team here and in his first season kept 21 clean sheets helping the club to promotion via the play offs. After being made club captain for the 2006-2007 season, Stuart picked up a bad injury which saw him sidelined for the majority of the season. He did return to the first team towards the end of the season but was released shortly after. In a spell which ran from 2004 to 2007 he had made 116 appearances between the sticks for the club. Following his release he joined Leyton Orient, however struggling to settle into London life, he left the club in his first year by mutual consent having made 30 appearances. In the summer 2008 he went on trial to Norwich City and subsequently signed a 1 year deal as backup. He remained backup seeing out his contract making 0 appearances. Summer 2009 saw him move to Scotish side Aberdeen as backup, he made 3 appearances before finding his 4th side in as many seasons, Notts County in the summer 2010 where he remained until 2012 making 79 appearances. Following his release he signed for Gillingham where he remains today as number 1 goalkeeper now aged 32.
Lee Butler
Starting his career at Haworth, Lee played for teams including Lincoln City, Aston Villa, Barnsley, Wigan, Scunthorpe, Hull and Dumferline, before signing for Halifax Town in 1999, he stayed at the club until 2002 when he joined Rovers after making 93 appearances for Halifax. He only made 10 appearances for Rovers and rejected the chance to become goalkeeping coach as he wanted to prolong his playing career and returned to Halifax, making a further 37 appearances between 2002-2003, Lee then joined Alfreton Town until 2005 making 88 appearances before returning to Halifax for the Third time between 2005-2008. He was also Assistant manager at Halifax. Since retiring from playing he became a goalkeeping coach and returned to Doncaster in this role, he was well liked for his personality and experience he brought to the dressing room. However following the appointment of Paul Dickov who brought in Paul Gerrard into this role, Lee was deemed a surplus to requirments, much to his surpirse. This brought an end to his 4 year stint in this role at the club. During the promotion season in 2012-2013, Lee as well as goalkeeper coaching, he was training set pieces, helping the kit man and organising away trips. Due to the change in manager, Lee was left in the dark and never got the send off the unsung hero deserved. In the summer 2012 Lee joined Bradford City as goalkeeping coach, a position he holds today.
Defenders
Simon Marples
Another fan favorite, Simon signed in 1999 for £12000 from Stocksbridge, this fee is still a club record for a Stocksbridge player. Simon had a youth career with Sheffield Wednesday and Rotherham, but never made the grade at these clubs. After signing for Rovers, the attackive right back attracted interest from unnamed Premiership clubs, Rovers valued him at £200000 due to his key role in the team that won back to back promotions. He departed Rovers in 2006 after making 151 appearances and joined Chester City on a free transfer. He played 46 times for Chester, however a fall out in 2008 over lack of first team football ended his time at the club. He then moved to Alfreton. Simon is now aged 38 and has never scored a goal, he has since retired and set up his own building company

Tim Ryan
Tim 'shoot' Ryan started his career at Scunthorpe United before playing for Buxton, he then joined Rovers in 1996, however due to club politics that we are all too familiar with at that time, he was loaned to Alrincham in 1997. During this time he has a disagreement with chairman Ken Richardson which resulted in Tim saying, he would never return to play for Rovers again. In 1997 he signed for Southport where he stayed until 2000 making 114 appearances. In 2000, with Ken gone and the club offering Tim a full time contract, the left back returned to Belle Vue. The popular figure made a further 181 appearances scoring 6 goals including some stunning long range strikes, this made the crowd shout 'shoot' whenever Tim was on the ball in an almost possible shooting position. In 2006 he had a brief spell at Peterborough before signing for Boston United. In 2007 he returned to play under previous manager Dave Penney at Darlington where he stayed until 2009, with a 2008 loan spell to Harrogate. After Darlington he joined Chester City where he became caretaker manager for 1 game which ended goaless, Tim then became assistant to the new manager, Jim Harvey. With Chester's financial problems, he left the club in 2010 and joined Stalybridge Cetlic along with Jim Harvey. He remained there until 1013 and had a brief spell with Bradford Park Avenue making 10 appearances before returning to Buxton as a player/manager.
He is now back at Rovers as a Coach co-ordinator, thanks to VSC forum member Scooter for reminding me.
Dean Barrick
Dean started his career at Sheffield Wednesday before joining Rotherham in 2001 where he played 99 games before joining Cambridge in 1993, here he made 91 appearances. Between 1995 and 1998 he played 109 games for Preston and in 1998 he joined Bury, during this time he spent some time on loan in Scotland to Ayr and in 2001 he was loaned to Rovers. Playing 11 games, he was signed permanently following this loan spell, he went on to play 51 more games for Rovers before being loaned to Hereford in 2002 and released in 2003. He then joined Nuneaton before hanging up the boots at Hucknall after 79 appearances between 2003 and 2005, during this time he had a spell as player/manager. Since retiring Dean has done some media work including for BBC radio Sheffield, doing reports and commentary including the last match at Belle View, the promotion back into the league at Stoke, the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy final at the Millennium Stadium and the highlight was the play-off final against Leeds at Wembley. He might also be known to some of our younger readers as Mr Barrick, he worked at Hatfield school as a p.e teacher for five years before doing a year in Poland and then moving to Thailand where he has spent the last five years. He is still playing football, but only for fun, such as over 35s leagues.
Jamie Price
Jamie spent his youth career at Leeds, he signed for Rovers in 1999 making 45 appearances before leaving in 2005. He went on to play for a variety of clubs including York and Harrogate. He is now 32 and plays for Bradford Park Avenue. I recently wrote a article about his career. Jamie Squires
Joining from Carlisle, Jamie had previously played for Preston and Dunfermline. He went on to make 30 appearances for Rovers before leaving in 2002 to join Nuneaton where he stayed until 2003. Since leaving Nuneaton he has played for Bamber bridge and Chorley before returning to Bamber bridge. This was his last club I can find he was registered for, however in 2012 he took part in a charity match playing for Preston Legends against Bamber bridge.
Barry Miller
Barry spent his best days at Belle Vue, signing initially on loan in 2000 before a 10,000 pound move from Gillingham. Barry made 66 appearances for Rovers and even captained the side. A knee operation meant he missed the start of the 2002/2003 season. Barry was well liked by fans not only for his solid performances in centre back on the pitch but he was a nice guy off it. In 2003 he left Rovers and joined Hucknall until a 2004 move to Leigh Genesis. He also spent time on loan to Burton Albion. He also had spells with Worksop and Ilkeston. Barry retired aged 30 after a health scare and the birth of his daughter. Berry now works part time at a church still living in Yorkshire. In September 2013 he returned to Rovers as temporary Chaplin.
Ben Futcher
Signing in 2002 from Stalybridge Celtic, he is a towering 6ft 7 centre back, however he only played 2 games for Rovers. He went on to sign for Lincoln City, where he would make 126 appearances scoring 14 goals between 2002 and 2005. During this time he was part of the team that finished runner up in the Play Offs 2 times. In 2005 he signed for rivals Boston United making 14 appearances before leaving to join Grimsby in 2006 who were pushing for promotion, however his first team chances were few and far between as he was behind current Rovers star Rob Jones in the peking order. Making 22 appearances he once again was part of a team that were play off runners up. He left Grimsby and joined his old Lincoln manager, Keith Alexander at Peterborough. With Keith leaving the club and Darren Ferguson coming in, Ben left the club and joined Bury in 2007, the club he is still part of today. Despite not leaving the club he did have loan spells at Oxford, Mansfield, Telford, Maccesfield and Halifax. In 2012 Ben was appointed player/development coach. He was also became joint caretaker manager in 2012, however now he has reverted back to his role as development Coach.
Chris Beech
The left back started his career as a youngster at Manchester City however failed to make the grade, he then joined Cardiff City in 1997 where he would make 46 appearances before joining Rotherham United in 1998. He played 55 times before his 2002 move to Doncaster. Making 28 appearances, he left Belle Vue in 2004 and joined Carlisle. Thanks to VSC forum members for helping out on this, however I am still unsure what Chris did following his time at Carlisle.

Midfielders
Kevin Sandwith

The defensive midfielder started out at as a youngster at Carlisle, he made 3 first team appearances before joining Telford, he remained here for 2 years before his 2001. The defensive midfielder started out playing regularly at left back, unfortunately he broke his foot which saw him sit out for 3 months. Upon his return he struggled to regain his place in the squad and in November 2002 he joined Halifax Town after making 12 appearances for Rovers. He remained at Halifax for 2 seasons making 51 appearances. Since leaving Halifax in 2004 he joined Lincoln City (2004-2005) Maccelsfield (2005-2006) Chester (2006-2008) Weymouth (2008-2009) Oxford (2009-2010) Mansfield (2010-2011) Gainsborough (2011-2012) before joining Buxton. Kevin informed me that he has not played for 12 months due to an injury he picked up last season on his anterior cruciate ligament. He also confessed to liking a change of scenery, with his age now 35, I would like to hope Kevin can still get back playing, he is also listed as a coach with Crossbar Coaching. Kevin also has one of the best wikipedia pictures I have ever seen, well worth checking it out.
Paul Carden
Only spending a brief time With Rovers in 2001, making 16 appearances, he signed from Chester City and rejoined them following his stay at Belle Vue. He remained at Chester until 2005 making 120 appearances bringing his total to 166 at the club. He then joined Peterborough United, until October 2006 when he had his contract terminated by mutual consent. Since this he has played for teams including Burton Albion, Accrington Stanley, Cambridge United and lastly Luton where he ended his playing career in 2012. Although you may not remember Paul from his Rovers days, you might remember him from the Sky documentary, Big Ron Manager, from 2006. Which was based around Ron Atkinson 'assisting' Steve Bleasdale whilst at Peterborough. Paul Carden was involved in one of the scenes that caused the biggest stir when he and team mate Mark Arber having a dressing room brawl. As well as his playing career he was also assistant manager whilst one of his stays at Cambridge (2008-2011) ironically he was loaned to Luton during this time, and even scored against the club he was currently assistant manager for, if you understand. Up until January 2013 he was first team coach at Luton Town.
Gareth Owen
A Wrexham legend, joining Rovers was his second team in his career, he was 29 at the time. The reason for this, he spent his youth and 12 Professional years at Wrexham, making nearly 300 appearances scoring 37 goals. The midfielder was awarded with a testimonial against Manchester United in 2000. He left Wrexham in 2001 and joined Doncaster, despite interest from many clubs, he spent 2 years at Rovers making 53 appearances scoring 7 goals. He fell out of favor in 2003 and was loaned to Northwich Victoria. He left Rovers at the end of this season and joined Welsh team, Connah's Quay Nomads and in 2005 he became player/manager of Airbus UK, he stayed here until 2008 making 89 appearances scoring 13 goals. He then joined Rhyl to link up With his Assistant whilst at Airbus, this move saw him return to playing and not coaching, he even won Welsh Premiership player of the year for May 2009. In 2011 he left Rhyl and returned to Airbus, this time he had hung up the boots and was appointed as head coach, however he left this position in 2012. He also works as a football development officer in Flintshire, North Wales.
Andy Watson
Played for Yorkshire Amateur and Farsley Celtic before joining rovers from Garfoth Town in 1998 for 25,000. The winger made 86 appearances scoring 8 goals, and at times he was fantastic, however at other times he was unnoticeable, he was a big game player and this earned him interest from bigger clubs including Sunderland. In 2003 Andy refused to sign a new contract at Belle Vue and left hopeful to sign a contract for a bigger club. Unfortunately he didn't get his break and signed for Tamworth, not the Premiership club he had been hoping for. His time at Tamworth was short after losing his driving license made him unable to travel. He returned to his previous club Farlsey Celtic in 2003-2004 season and then signed for Chester City for the 2004-2005 season which included a loan spell at Forest Green Rovers. In 2005 Andy returned for a 3rd time to Farsley Celtic, he was still at the club in 2008. Unfortunately i cannot find further information about him, now aged 35 he may of retired, his career was often disrupted due to injury. To be fair to Andy, he has since said his biggest footballing regret was leaving Rovers. He explained we had offered him a new deal for 4 years but agents were telling him he could go to bigger and better things, so he rejected to contract offer to his understanding the door was going to be open for him to return, should a deal with a bigger club not happen. However his move to a bigger club and Sunderland fell through, and Rovers had already signed a replacement in the form of Michael Mcindoe.
Jamie Paterson
Unfortunately due to a current Nottingham Forest player of the same name it is hard to find much info on our ex Rover. Jamie joined Rovers from Halifax in 2000, he had started his career at Halifax before moving to his native home, Scotland to play for Falkirk for the 1994-1995 season, he returned to England with Scunthorpe United where he stayed for 2 seasons before returning to Halifax in 1997, he scored the goal that took them back into the football league in 1998 with Rovers going the other way, he was their top goalscorer for the 1999-2000 season. The wee Scotsman was a fans favorite at Belle Vue, scoring on his debut and winning back to back player of the year for his first and second seasons at Rovers. In the 2003-2004 season Jamie joined Barrow, and in 2005 he joined Kettering where he was captain and played under short term manager Paul Gascoigne. The most recent club he played for was Brackley Town who he joined in November 2008. Now aged 40 he has retired from playing football, I cannot find any evidence for what he is doing now, I believe he is still living local to Halifax and has a son called Nathon.

Paul Green
Signing at the age of 16, having been released from Sheffield Wednesday's academy for being 'too small' he joined Rovers youth team. He made his first team debut at the age of 19 in March 2001 against Northwich Victoria and scored his first senior goal just 3 days later. In his first season he made 8 appearances scoring 2 goals. The Next season he bacame an important part of the team, and remained there until 2008. Green scored the first goal of the game in the 2003 play off final victory, when he headed in Tim Ryan's cross. Green was well liked in his time at Rovers, playing at both Belle Vue and the Keepmoat. He played his part in 2 more promotions With Rovers, winning the Division 3 and beating Leeds at Wembley in the League 1 play off final. Having played for Rovers from Conference to League 1 promotion, in 2008 he didn't sign a new contract, instead moved on a free transfer to Derby County, this annoyed many fans, not only at the loss of Green, but the fact that we lost such a key player for free. He has made 279 appearances, scoring 34 goals in all competitions. He spent 7 Seasons as a pro at Doncaster. He soon became a key player for Derby, and he made his debut in the opening game of the 2008-2009 season in a 1-0 defeat to former Club Doncaster Rovers. Despite a few injuries, he remained ever present in the Derby team and his fine form earned him an international call up to play for Northern Ireland, he also attracted interest from Premiership Clubs (at the time) Wolves and Blackpool, however he remained at Derby. In 2012 Green rejected a contract extension With Derby, feeling it was time for a change, he was dropped by manager Nigel Clough and replaced With 17year old hotshot, WIll Hughes. Paul left Derby at the end of the season after making 143 appearances, scoring 13 goals in all competitions. He signed for Leeds United, his time at Leeds has been mixed with ups and downs, unfortunatly injury has distrupted his recent career, but he has also reached highs of been given the captians armband. However, Paul found himself out of favor in the 2013-2014 season, and made a loan move to Ipswich in Febuary 2014.
Joining in 2002 from Barnsley, where he had spent his youth career. Ricky was a well liked person around Belle Vue, both on and off the field, many fans crediting his tough tackling and high passionate play. He helped Rovers win promotion twice, staying at Rovers until 2006 making 137 appearances scoring 9 goals. In 2006 he was loaned to Chester City before moving to Grimsby at the end of the season along with Nick Fenton, Ricky joined Darlington on loan before a full move in 2007, joining up with Dave Penney. He made a total of 90 appearances before a 2009 move to Notts County, at the same time as Sol Campbell and Sven Goran Eriksson, despite them leaving just after entering the club, Ricky was part of the team that won League 2 in 2009-2010. In November 2011 he joined Bradford City on loan before a full transfer in January, Ricky became an important part of the team that beat Arsenal and many more giants on their route to Wembley in the League Cup final, finishing as runners up to Swansea. In the same season they won promotion through the play offs. In November 2013 he joined Northampton on loan before making the move in January 2014. Ricky was coaching one of our youth teams, however with his recent move to Northampton, I am unsure if he will still be doing this role.
Franic Tierney
Sir to you an me, described by Robbie Fowler in his book as a true talent, Robbie even admitted Franny to be a better player then him, the two attended the same school in Liverpool. Francis started his career at Crewe Alexander, and as a youngster attracted a lot of attention from Premiership clubs including Liverpool, who in 1993 made a successful bid of 750,000, however, this deal unfortunately fell through as he failed a medical. He suffered another setback the next season when he suffered a serious cruciate ligament injury, which kept him out for nearly a year. Upon comeback Francis suffered from inconsistency, mainly due to confidence. In 1998 he moved on from Crewe after making 87 appearances scoring 10 goals, winning promotion from Division 3 in 1994-1995 and Division 2 play offs 1996-1997 and signed for Notts County where he stayed until 2000 scoring 4 goals in 32 appearances. He then moved to Exeter however, he only made 7 appearances scoring 1 goal before his 2001 move to Doncaster. Many Rovers fans will know him as Sir Francis Tierney due to his 'golden goal' that won us the 2002-2003 Conference play off final at Stoke and promotion back into the football league on 10th May 2003. He was also part of the team that won the Division 3 the following year, despite being favorites to finish bottom. Franny left Belle Vue in 2005 due to injures and he joined Northwich Victoria however retired in 2006 after just a handful of appearances. Franny is a Doncaster Hero and always will be, but it must be said that it is unfortunate for him, as a player that was destined for bigger things then playing in the conference. If it wasn't for injures Francis Tierney would possibly be a household name, not just in Doncaster, but in England. Instead, Franny now is a lorry driver, living in Liverpool. He said his career was self destruction but had a high towards the end, meaning his time at Doncaster.
Every year Rovers fans want to name something after him a bar, a stand, a road, a food kiosk, a pint and i'm sure theres more examples.
Strikers
Paul Barnes
Fans favorite Paul started his career at Notts County in 1985 and stayed for 5 years making 53 appearances and scoring 14 goals, helping the club achieve promotion in the 1989-1990 season from the old Division 3. In 1990 he joined Stoke where he stayed until a 1992 move to York City. He was always getting his name on the score sheet scoring 21 goals in 1992-1993 helping the club win promotion through the Division 3 play offs. The Next season he scored and impressive 24 appearances winning York City, clubman of the year. In 1995 he moved to Birmingham for £350,000 after making 148 appearances scoring an impressive 76 goals. 6 months after his move to Birmingham he moved to Burnley for £300,000 where he stayed until 1998 scoring 30 goals in 65 appearances. Paul then moved to Huddersfield and then Bury with a loan spell at Nuneaton. In 2001 he moved to Belle Vue and despite picking up an injury early in his stay at the club, he found his first team role and found his goal scoring ways. He helped the club reach and win promotion through the play offs, winning club player of the year in the process and the golden boot. In 2003 he left Doncaster after an impressive record of 31 goals in 71 appearances, he joined Tamworth until a 2004 move to Hinckley United, his last registered club. Now 46 I am unsure on what Paul is doing these days, but if anyone has any info, I would love to add to this.Justin Jackson
One of the biggest let downs in recent history, Justin started his career at Bolton, however failing to make the grade he joined Lancaster City in 1993, he then went on to join Ayr United in 1994, Penrith in 1995, Ilkeston Town 1995, Morecombe 1995, Woking 1996 before settling at Notts County in 1997, well I say settling, he made 26 appearances there, scoring 1 goal with loans spells to Morecombe, Rotherham and Halifax. In 1999 he moved to sign for Morecombe permantly, scoring an impressive 29 goals in 38 appearances, and was the top goalscorer in the league, this fine form earned him a record transfee between two non-League Clubs in 2000 when he moved to Rushden and Diamonds for £180,000. He scored 18 goals in 45 appearances however in 2001 found himself on the transfer list after failing to live up to his previous record, Doncaster then pounced hoping that he could find his form at Belle Vue, he was purchased for an inital £100,000 which rose to £150,000 with add ons, which included Rovers winning promotion. He didn't produce the goals with Rovers scoring just 5 in 39 appearances, and John Ryan paid up his contract in October 2003. Ironically he was brought in to replace flop Carl Alford. He went on to join Accrington, to try and rebuild his reputation, this ofcourse didn't go as planned making just 2 appearances for the club, lasting only 6 weeks before having his contract terminated due to missing training. He then joined Chester City on trial, however he didn't last a whole reserves game, getting subsituted and not signed. In search of a new club in November 2004 he joined up with Stafford Rangers, however he didn't stay around long, leaving before he got match fit. In 2007 he was in Australia playing for ametuer side, Casey Comets, however returned to England in an attempt to sign for Tamworth, unfortuately, due to international clearance he was unable to sign for Tamworth, but stayed around in hope to earn a deal. The last team he was registered with was Brackley Town between 2007-2008, however I am unable to find a current club, now aged 39, he has probably retired.
Robert Gill
Rob started out at Nottingham Forest in their academy before joining Rovers youth team. He earned his place in the first team in 2001 and remained at the club until 2004 making 55 appearances and scoring 11 goals. In 2003 he was loaned out to Chester City as welll as spending loan spells with Dagenham & Redbridge and Burton Albion. He left Rovers in 2004 and signed for Scarborough before moving to Forest Green a year later. In 2006 he joined Hucknall before joining Ilkeston the same year. He has had a spell at New Zealand team, WaiBOP United. From research he returned to Hucknall before joining Carlton and signed for Rainworth in January 2012.
Mark Sale
6ft5 striker started his career at Stoke, even making 2 appearances before being released and joined Cambridge United before joining Rocester and later joined Birmingham in 1992, staying for one season until he joined Torquay, then Preston, Mansfield, Colchester, Plymouth (loan) and then Rushden & Diamonds before joining Rovers in 2001. He only scored 3 goals in his 14 appearances before leaving in 2002 to join Tamworth. He later had spells at Hucknall, Alfreton, Northwich and finally Hednesford Town in 2007. He has since retired from playing and is currently Youth Team manager at Burton Albion, whilst doing this he is also working as a football Development officer in the community.
Tristram Whitman
One of my personal favorites, many of you will recall the 1st of May 2003, during the play off semi final, first leg against Chester City, 4 minutes of added time and Rovers were 1-0 down thanks to a Kevin McIntyre goal, who was playing for Chester. With cramped up Ricky Ravenhill laying on the pitch, with less then a minute to play at the packed Belle Vue ground, Jamie Paterson laid the ball off for a edge of box shot by Tristan, scoring his 3rd goal in 4 games. Tristan has signed for Rovers in 2000 for 10,000 pounds from Arnold Town, initially he played in the reserves with Rovers being his first profession club, but he made his debut in November 2000, he went on to play 69 games scoring 15 goals. He will always be remember for that goal against Chester. In 2003 he joined Tamworth on loan, before moving to Dagenham and Redbridge, this was short lived as he joined Scarborough shortly after and then Leigh on loan. July 2004 saw Tris return to Tamworth making 53 appearances scoring 12 goals, in 2005 he spent a few months on loan to Crawley before signing for Farsley Celtic in July 2007. He has since had a spell with Carlton Town along with ex Rover Robert Gill. Tris is now a community coach with Notts County.
Edit: according to VSC member the Red Baron, Tris did play for Bedworth United earlier this season, however is no longer attached to the Club.
